Community Environment Associates (CEA)

CEA is a consultancy which specialises in work on involving local communities in changing, developing or sustaining their environment and in helping them make the links between their local problems and bigger national and global issues. CEA also carries out a range of evaluation work. The clients we have worked for are shown by the recent work listed below. You can download a leaflet giving more details here

CEA is a limited company set up by Chris Church and Jan McHarry . We are happy to discuss or tender for any work that may be relevant. Please contact Chris Church in the first instance.

CEA works with a range of associates and other consultancies and is always open to new ideas or offers on joint working.

Recent and Current CEA work includes:

  • A range of training events on climate change communications with Climate Outreach Information Network (COIN) and Talk Action – see Training page for more details. Chris Church has also written two reports on climate change.

  • Co-writing ‘Changing the way we work’ – a guide to green office practices for the Voluntary and Community Sector for the Every Action Counts programme

  • Training over 150 advisors for the National Lottery ‘Local Food’ programme

  • Training and advice work for the Big Green Challenge – the programme run by NESAT to identify innovative local action on climate change

  • A major programme for the London Borough of Waltham Forest to engage with diverse communities to increase involvement and participation in recycling. A summary report (Engaging Diverse Communities in work on Recycling) is available to download here.

  • A 'Green Office' guide for the Voluntary and Community Sector (for Every Action Counts, in partnership with the Ethical Property Foundation)

  • Work with University College London on "Mapping Change for Sustainable Communities", a major (June 2007) programme to work with local communities using internet-based mapping systems to record and map environmental information and change within the Thames Gateway region.

  • Work on a new inter-faith environmental programme for London with the Conservation Foundation and London 21

  • A report on "The impact of Procurement Policy and Practice on Social Sustainability" for Defra (March 2006) available here

  • A three year evaluation for Groundwork UK of a major volunteer and mentor development programme.

  • A report for the GLA with London Sustainability Exchange on the gaps and opportunities existing between the UK Sustainable Development Strategy and the Various London Plans.

  • An evaluative review of London's Community Strategies from a sustainable development perspective for London Sustainability Exchange, London 21 and the Government Office for London.

  • A major review of work by Faith organisations on environment and sustainable development issues for the Sustainable Development Commission.

  • A checklist for Defra on effective actions by community organisations, downloadable here

  • Seven years work (and still ongoing) with the London Borough of Redbridge on their innovative Community Agenda 21 programme

  • Running five training and consultation events for DEFRA to support the Review of the UK Sustainable Development Strategy
